Make sure you get the right material for the job when choosing between screed or the various types of concrete available. Let us help you make the decision.
Whether you have a DIY project on the cards, or you have a much bigger task, you need to know that what you are ordering is going to be fit for purpose and up to the job. When it comes to concrete, many people have a misconception that there is only one type available and that it is suitable for any task. The truth is, there are many things to consider before you decide on the best material for your needs, and as a reputable concrete supplier, we are happy to take you through your options.
Concrete is a material that is used for structural work, such as laying foundations and footings. If your project is to lay a patio or a base for a garage or shed, build a wall or secure an existing fence, concrete is the material that you need to order.
Screed is a less coarse material which gives it a much smoother finish than concrete. Screed is applied to be only a few centimetres thick and will usually be laid over a concrete base. It gives a durable, level finish that allows you to lay tiles, laminate or carpet on an even surface which gives a much better finish. Due to its smooth finish and hard-wearing nature, screed can also be left exposed in areas that don’t require softer furnishing. Industrial environments will often keep costs low by leaving screed floors exposed.
Once you have determined that you need concrete, there are many different types to choose from. The type of work you want the concrete to do will determine which you need to go for. It is always a good idea to contact a concrete supplier such as Pez Concrete and Liquid Screed so that we can advise which type of concrete will be best.
You can choose from Standardised Prescribed Concrete which comes in ranges from ST1 to ST5, and this concrete is generally suitable for smaller jobs like setting kerbs and drainage, all the way to being used as flooring in sheds and conservatories.
A few Designated Concrete options are also available:
Volumetric concrete is made up on-site to suit your specific requirements. This is the best option if you need a small amount or you aren’t quite sure how much you need. Another benefit is that it will be fresher because it’s made on-site and so you have longer to work with it, and if you’ve ordered the wrong type, it can be changed and mixed to your requirements.
Ready-mixed is usually made in large batches and dispensed into delivery trucks to be sent to a site for pouring. The option is usually best for large deliveries and ensures your whole batch of concrete is of a consistent grade. If you have ordered too much, you will end up wasting money though.
